Summary

This course is designed for industry professionals who are either thinking of moving into asset management, have just moved into asset management, or would like to broaden their understanding of asset management.

Suitable for individuals working in any sized oil and gas company. By completing this course, attendees will be equipped to decide where to focus their energies to make a difference to the value of the asset. Throughout the course, attendees will be shown what they need to know and what they need to do.

A critical take-away is that relatively small changes can make a material difference to the value of the asset.

Learning Outcomes

Attendees will learn

  • Analyse the asset economically to identify priority areas for value improvement and develop an integrated life-of-field strategy for the asset
  • Establish annual and day‑to‑day asset management routines that dovetail with corporate requirements and structure the asset team to maximise efficiency and quality
  • Monitor key safety and operational metrics, determine appropriate intervention points, and populate a Risk Radar correctly
  • Characterise field facilities, describe typical project structures, track project progress, and apply decision‑making techniques to manage projects effectively
  • Identify common subsurface pitfalls, evaluate options to enhance field value, and apply methods for well planning and reserve representation
  • Explain key commercial and contractual documents, perform stakeholder analysis, and manage relations with partners and operators

Foundations: Leadership

  • Define the purpose and objectives of an Asset Manager
  • Learn how to decide what to do and “set the agenda”
  • Learn how to economically analyse an asset
  • Understand how to generate an Asset Strategy

Foundations: Management

  • Understand the year of the asset through the four key corporate tasks
  • Understand how to set up the Asset on a day-to-day basis to maximise efficiency

Safety and Operations

  • Understand, as an Asset Manager, what you need to be aware of in this domain
  • Learn about the key HSE metrics you need to keep on top of
  • Appreciate the different efficiency metrics and how a choke model works
  • Learn how to create and manage risk radars

Projects and Engineering

  • Understand what you need to be aware of in terms of facilities and projects
  • Learn about the stage gates and how they can be scaled
  • Understand how to make decisions on projects and how to present them to the decision makers

Subsurface

  • Learn what the key components of the subsurface domain are
  • Learn how to improve the value of the asset
  • Understand the various methods for forecasting the future
  • Appreciate what to look out for when you are drilling wells

Commercial

  • Understand the “rules of the game”, two key commercial documents and their purpose
  • Learn about how to deal with stakeholders, especially partners
  • As a non-operator, how to influence your operator

About the Instructor

Joel has over 30 years of experience in the Oil and Gas Industry, with the last 20 years in Asset Management.

Joel has worked for a number of different operators, including Total, Nexen, Sasol and Tullow. He started his career as a logging engineer in the North Sea, Nigeria and Italy, and then went back to school to study for an Meng at Heriot Watt University. He then worked as a reservoir engineer for Fina, Total-Fina, TotalFinaElf and finally Total.

Joel moved into Asset Management during the latter years at Total and then moved to Nexen, where he was the Subsurface Manager and then the Asset Manager for the giant Buzzard field in the North Sea. His next role was the Asset Manager for the non-operated Etame field in Gabon for Sasol.

His most recent role was the Developments Manager for the deepwater Ghana Assets, Jubilee and TEN, for Tullow.

Joel now works as a Developments Advisor for Rockflow Resources

Joel recognised that there is very little training available for Asset Managers, yet at the same time, a well organised, focussed and structured Asset Management function can make a huge difference to the value of an Asset. He is a founder member of the European Chapter of the SPEE.
